SV 98 expands grassroots sports offerings: Lilies give Darmstadt Diamonds a new home.

SV Darmstadt 98 will in future also offer American football under the Lilien banner. The Darmstadt Diamonds will be integrated into the club, thereby gaining a long-term sporting and organisational future.

With this move, SV 98 is helping a traditional Darmstadt club while simultaneously expanding its grassroots and youth sports offerings. More than 100 active members from the local American football community will now become part of the Lilies family.

Roy Reinelt-Peter, Executive Board member responsible for amateur departments and the fan and supporter division, said: „It was important to us that this wasn’t simply a case of taking something over or replacing it. We want to build something together. The history and identity of the Diamonds are to be preserved, while the players will benefit from the structures and resources of a multi-sport club.“

Reinelt-Peter added: „American football inspires many people and holds great potential, particularly in youth sports. At the same time, the Diamonds bring us over 100 new members for our grassroots sports programs. This aligns perfectly with our goal of further developing SV 98 as the city’s major sports club and strengthening our other sporting activities alongside professional football.“

Founded in 1985, the Darmstadt Diamonds look back on a history spanning more than 40 years, during which their men’s team competed in Germany’s top division throughout the 1990s and 2000s. Their youth development program was particularly successful over many years, with the Diamonds winning the German Youth Championship in 1995 and 2001.

For the Darmstadt Diamonds, this integration offers the opportunity to begin a new chapter in their history on a stable foundation following several years of sporting and organizational challenges. With the new American Football division, SV 98 is also continuing its efforts to expand its range of recreational sports. Alongside the athletic development of existing teams, youth development is set to play a particularly important role.

Preparations for the organisational and sporting integration will take place over the coming weeks in collaboration with Darmstadt Diamonds officials. Further information regarding the new division, teams, and training sessions is available here.

Opposition Check: Energie Cottbus

For the very first time, Energie Cottbus will play an away match at the Böllenfalltor this Saturday (October 10th). The team from Lusatia had to wait twelve years to return to the 2. Bundesliga. Now, their journey takes them to Darmstadt for the first time. This was made possible by Jannis Boziaris, whose goal in Regensburg on the final matchday fired Cottbus back into Germany's second-highest division. Yet the path there began long before that.
