“Darmstadt 98 has become a club close to my heart”

SV Darmstadt 98 will host Eintracht Braunschweig next Saturday (September 13th, 1pm) at the Merck Stadium at Böllenfalltor. We've summarised the most important information from the press conference for you.

Personnel update: Paul Will and Matthias Bader are still out. All other players are available for selection.

... during the international break:

At the beginning of the week, when all the international players returned, we reviewed the Lautern game. The last 10-15 minutes were especially important to discuss, after our previously highly commanding performance. This could have been one of the most important games of the season if we draw the right conclusions from it. Otherwise, we had a great tennis team event with TEC Darmstadt during the international break. Then came the friendly against Waldhof Mannheim, which also served its purpose and in which some players like Fynn Lakenmacher and Bartosz Bialek showed their skills. We also took a few days off so we can start this week with full focus.

… about the anticipation of the home game:

We’re looking forward to the home game and to creating a great atmosphere with our fans, and hopefully being successful. We want to work on feeling better on Saturday than we did after the Lautern game.

… about Eintracht Braunschweig’s style of play:

I expect confident opponents who started the season very well and were eliminated from the cup after a tough fight against VfB Stuttgart. Braunschweig is a team that plays very intensely. They try to act boldly, press boldly, and bravely search for balls deep. You can feel the impact that my colleague has had. They’re a team that places a lot of value on intensity and physicality.

… about the Braunschweig squad:

In Yardimci, you have a powerful and tall player who is also very fast, reaching a speed of 36 kilometers per hour. Conteh and Heußer are extremely hard runners. Gomez and Di Michele Sánchez are players who can decide a game with individual actions. In Köhler, you have a strong footballer who now mostly plays centrally. This is a team that has definitely changed its squad structure compared to last year. There’s more courage in the game now, more dynamism, and more technique.

… about the development of his team over the past year:

I can be a lot more certain about what will happen on Saturday compared to my first home game against Braunschweig. I can rely on my team more because we’ve been working together longer now, know more about each other and have a different physical foundation. Everything that has happened in between has been exciting, thrilling, fantastic and sometimes sobering. I think a deep emotional connection to the club and the region has grown between the first home game and the home game on Saturday. It’s not just a job for me, it’s also emotion and passion. This feeling has really developed that this has become a club close to my heart. That – coupled with knowing about my team, that we can trust each other because we know more about each other – makes things different.

Left hook, 'One hundred and eightyyyyyyy', and hand over the baton. Doesn't sound like football – and that's true. KSC is often associated with professional football, but with the sheer number of titles the club has won, it's worth looking beyond the pitch. Titles from Baden-Württemberg to Rome.

As Florian Kohfeldt approached the team's dressing room at halftime, the Darmstadt head coach heard exactly one sentence: "It's not finished." Fraser Hornby had uttered it, setting the tone for his teammates and himself. What followed was a remarkable second half from Darmstadt 98 and a point against SV Elversberg, a point that, while likely insufficient for their promotion hopes in southern Hesse, nonetheless filled the Darmstadt fans with pride.
