Facts and Figures: The Top Stats Before the Kiel Game

The ball will finally start rolling again at the Merck Stadium on Saturday. Darmstadt 98 kick off their new second division season with a home game against Holstein Kiel. SV Darmstadt 98 and Holstein Kiel have faced each other 14 times in second-division matches. Darmstadt has won six of these encounters, with six ending in a draw. Kiel has only managed to secure a victory twice. Most notably, Darmstadt is unbeaten against Kiel in their last seven matches.

A power at Bölle

The Böllenfalltor stadium proved to be a fortress last season. With 35 points from home games, Darmstadt finished third in the league’s home table. They aim to build on this strength at the start of the season.

A difficult season for the storks

Holstein Kiel can look back on a rather mixed season. With a twelfth-place finish and 41 points, the Storks played their weakest second-division season to date in the era of the three-point rule.

Undefeated throughout the summer

While Darmstadt completed their preseason undefeated, Holstein Kiel’s friendly matches were less successful. However, the North German side did face some notable opponents in Swansea City, Mainz 05, and Hoffenheim.

Now the cards are reshuffled – and both teams kick off the new season with their first competitive match.

Season starts with differing signs

The last two season starts were completely different from Darmstadt’s perspective. While Darmstadt started successfully last season with a home win against VfL Bochum and lost only one of their first nine second-division matches, the team from southern Hesse only managed to collect one point in their first four games in 2024/25.

Upswing thanks to Walter

Tim Walter brought new energy to Holstein Kiel. The Storks showed significant improvement, especially away from home, celebrating three wins in five away matches under the new head coach. Walter’s personal record against Darmstadt also speaks in his favour: as HSV coach, he inflicted Darmstadt’s heaviest home defeat in the 2. Bundesliga in February 2022 with a 5-0 victory at the Böllenfalltor stadium.

Undefeated since 2021

Kiel’s last competitive victory against Darmstadt dates back to 2021. Back then, the Storks prevailed in both the league and the DFB Cup. Since then, Holstein Kiel has failed to win any of the seven direct encounters with SV Darmstadt 98.

On Saturday (August 8th, 1pm), SV 98 asks you to take note of the following information for the upcoming home game. For the start of the season, we will be offering women's entrances at the west entrances. Additionally, there will be a "Bölle Bande" family entrance with easier access at the Karl-Hess-Platz entrance. Furthermore, in addition to the existing regulations, visitors are permitted to bring one non-alcoholic beverage in PET bottles up to 0.5 litres into the stadium for this game.
