It was clear from the start that the Young Lilies were determined not to leave the pitch empty-handed again. After the very unlucky 1-0 defeat against Baunatal the previous week, the Young Lilies were determined to do things differently this time. In the tight relegation battle of the Hessenliga, every single point counts – making it all the more important that the U21s were able to celebrate three points on Saturday.
After 22 minutes, Tim Arnold headed home from a corner to reward the Young Lilies‘ attacking efforts for the first time in the match. „That was a real confidence booster,“ explained U21 coach Sebastian Schmitt. Before halftime, Darmstadt struck again, with Milian Herbst scoring in the 44th minute to give them a deserved 2-0 lead at the break.
The Young Lilies continued their strong play after the restart and remained particularly solid defensively. „We were ready to fight for every ball defensively and clear everything away,“ Schmitt explained. With such a strong defence behind them, the attacking play became much easier. The young Lilies‘ forwards repeatedly found themselves in excellent positions and created numerous scoring opportunities. It was fortunate that this convincing performance was also reflected on the scoreboard, as the game’s outcome became even more decisive as the match progressed. Manolo Merx (58th minute) and Imad Jaadar (75th minute) scored to make it 3-0 and 4-0 respectively, sealing the U21s‘ first victory since February 27th. This was also an enormously important win for the players‘ morale. „A weight has been lifted,“ Schmitt readily admitted.
