SV Darmstadt 98’s U21 team lost 2-1 (0–0) to Türk Gücü Friedberg. Following a narrow but deserved defeat, Patrick Kurt’s squad has the opportunity to pick up points again as early as Wednesday.
In the early stages, the tension surrounding the match’s unique atmosphere was evident among the Lilien. Although the team was defensively solid at first, they lacked composure and precision when in possession. Whether building play from the back or transitioning quickly, the Darmstadt side repeatedly committed passing errors, allowing Friedberg to threaten. However, the hosts were too wasteful with their chances, and goalkeeper Benedikt Börner also produced several impressive saves.
In the second half, the game opened up for both teams, creating more space and scoring opportunities at both ends. Friedberg initially remained the more dangerous side and took the lead in the 57th minute: following a corner kick, Noah Michel found the ball amidst a scramble and scored to make it 1–0.
The „Lilies“ responded to falling behind by producing their strongest spell of the match. After a well-executed passing sequence around the opposition penalty area, Milian Herbst equalised in the 67th minute with a spectacular finish. However, the joy was short-lived; seven minutes later, Toni Reljic restored Friedberg’s lead. His deflected shot from around 18 metres out proved unstoppable for Benedikt Börner.
Thanks in part to substitutions, the Lilies stayed in the game during the closing stages and harboured hopes of securing a point right up to the end. Two minutes before time, Loann Schnerring had a chance to equalise but fired his shot just wide of the goal. As Friedberg also failed to convert further chances after the break, the match ended 2–1.
Head coach Patrick Kurt on the team’s first defeat of the season: „Friedberg’s victory was deserved. We failed to play with the necessary intensity and precision to create more chances for ourselves. Against an opponent with such individual quality, they are always capable of punishing even the smallest errors. We have little time before the next match, but we will prepare well to ensure that on Wednesday we once again display the qualities that have defined our recent performances.“
Following their first defeat of the season, SV 98 has slipped to eighth place in the standings. SV Rot-Weiss Walldorf will visit Darmstadt as early as Wednesday (September 9, 7pm). The visitors have collected four points so far and sit in 15th place.

Sauer (43') scored from close range just before halftime, and in the 64th minute, the Red Devils added another through Tazemeta. Berisha then sealed the win in stoppage time (90+4). Darmstadt 98 remain on just one point after four matchdays this season.

On May 18th, after a 1-1 draw at Bayer Leverkusen, the club’s first-ever relegation from the Bundesliga was confirmed. After 33 years of uninterrupted top-flight football, the Red Devils had to make the drop to the second division. But just one week later, the chance for a conciliatory end to the season presented itself at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium. FCK seized it. With a 1-0 victory against Karlsruher SC, Kaiserslautern won the DFB Cup for the second time, after their first title in 1990.
