A premiere for SV 98. The Lilies have played their first match in the "Bundesliga Talent Series". In the newly introduced additional U21 competition, the team from southern Hesse drew 3-3 (2-1) with SV Elversberg despite trailing at the break.
Darmstadt’s U19 and U21 team, coached by Maximilian Mehring, faced a formidable Elversberg side. Tim Boss, Luca Pfeiffer, Frederik Schmahl, and Raif Adam, all from the Saarland club’s professional squad, were all on the pitch.
For the first 15 to 20 minutes, the young Lilies showed some signs of nervousness. Against the individually strong and experienced hosts, SV 98 initially needed some time to find their rhythm. However, as the game progressed, the team stabilised and found their rhythm.
The Lilies suffered their first setback in the 18th minute. Raif Adam converted a penalty to give Elversberg a 1-0 lead. The goal seemed to have an immediate impact, and just four minutes later, SVE extended their lead to 2-0 through Oleksandr Foramina. After an attack down the wing, Darmstadt failed to defend the cross in the centre decisively enough.
But instead of being intimidated by the two-goal deficit, the Lilies grew increasingly bold. Their passing became more assured, the team played with greater purpose going forward, and in the 32nd minute, they were rewarded with a spectacular goal to pull one back. Leon Keranovic won the ball back from defence, moved dynamically into the center, and unleashed a shot from around 25 metres that nestled under the crossbar. A truly stunning goal to make it 2-1.
Even after that, SV 98 remained dangerous. Noel Gisbrecht found himself in a promising position in front of the Elversberg goal and had a golden opportunity to equalise. Kelvin Kunstmann also had a good chance down the wing but failed to convert from a tight angle. A 2-2 draw was certainly within reach, but ultimately, the teams went into halftime trailing by a narrow 2-1.
Even after the change of ends, the young Lilies remained courageous and continued to push forward. After four substitutions, the game became more balanced, with the Lilies increasingly creating good counter-attacking opportunities. They repeatedly attacked at high speed towards the Elversberg goal, but lacked the final touch in three or four promising situations.
In the 79th minute, SV 98 finally rewarded their efforts: substitute Maurice Bittroff capitalised on another counter-attack and scored the equaliser to make it 2-2. Subsequently, the Lilies increasingly took control and clearly had the momentum on their side. However, it was precisely during this strong phase that the hosts struck again. Just two minutes after the equaliser, Darmstadt failed to clear the ball decisively after a set piece, allowing Luca Pfeiffer to pounce on the loose ball and score to make it 3-2..
The young Lilies were not discouraged, however, and threw everything forward once more in the closing stages. With intense counter-pressing and numerous corner kicks, SV 98 put their opponents under pressure and were rewarded with the final action of the match. In the third minute of stoppage time, Japhet Volkmann brilliantly set up the attack, which Keanu Blasa finished off to score the equaliser, making it 3-3.
Max Mehring, Sporting Director of the Youth Academy, commented on the encounter: „This match provided exactly the added value we had hoped for.“
