„Football can sometimes be incredibly cruel.“

Returning to southern Hesse empty-handed, SV Darmstadt 98 suffered a 3-2 away defeat against Greuther Fürth. Particularly bitter: the Lilies twice took the lead in Franconia but ultimately succumbed. How do the two head coaches assess the 90 minutes? What do captain Marcel Schuhen and Kai Klefisch have to say about the loss? We've compiled all the post-match reactions for you.

Florian Kohfeldt:

„Congratulations to Fürth on their home win. Football can be beautiful at times and incredibly cruel at others. It was a crucial match for both teams. The first half was uneven. There were chances at both ends. Then we scored and conceded a penalty. In the second half, I thought we were very strong until we went 2-1 up. We controlled the game and had good spacing. We were patient and waited for the right moments. It’s great that Furu scored. He’s developed tremendously. We deservedly led 2-1 at that point. What happened after that is inexplicable. It hurts a lot. We’ll still try to win the remaining games this season. But it’s getting harder and harder to finish in the top three.“

Heiko Vogel:

„From my perspective, this was the most respectful preparation I’ve ever had for a match. I considered Darmstadt the best of the Big Five. They have a good system of play and individual talent up front. We turned the game around in stoppage time; it couldn’t have been better, in my opinion. This is a victory that gives us far more than just three points, but also a lot of energy. We’re getting better week by week. There’s only one word that does justice to my team: pride.“

Marcel Schuhen:

„We didn’t play a good first half, but still took a somewhat lucky lead. Fürth equalised with a clear penalty. We then played a better second half. Towards the end, however, we let it slip away. The way the 2-2 came about is particularly bitter for us. We lacked the defensive stability today. Fürth has a lot of quality and experience in attack. You could see that in many situations and in their finishing. Our attack looked good up to the spaces between the lines. We played well up to that point, but then we lacked the final touch.“

Kai Klefisch:

„We scored the first goal and felt like we had the game under control. Despite Fürth’s equaliser from the corner, we still felt we had more of the play. Perhaps we let that feeling get to us too much, because Fürth has such good attacking players, anything can happen with them. Nevertheless, you should never concede two goals here after taking a 2-1 lead. We’re currently in this slump, and it’s difficult to get out of it right now. We still gave it our all, but in the end, it wasn’t enough today. We have four more games, and we’ll give it our all in them.“
