„Great team spirit“

Darmstadt 98 secured a thrilling victory against Karlsruher SC. Despite falling behind at one point, they remained composed and turned the game around. What did the players have to say about this home win, and what was head coach Florian Kohfeldt's take on the match? We've compiled all the reactions.

Florian Kohfeldt:

„We dominated the game for long stretches. We had many scoring opportunities, which we didn’t capitalise on enough. Furthermore, we defended very well. However, we conceded two goals, seemingly both out of nowhere. The second one, in particular, was completely unnecessary. That’s also the only phase I’m more critical of in my team. After going 2-1 up, I had the feeling that this attitude of ‚we’ll just play it out now‘ was creeping in, and that won’t work. We have to stay consistent. We have to take advantage of every opportunity going forward and, above all, defend consistently. The fact that we ultimately won 3-2 speaks volumes for us and the spirit we have within the group.“

Christian Eichner:

„That was a deserved victory for Darmstadt. We were very well prepared. In the first six minutes, there were situations we had discussed many times beforehand. Darmstadt is very secure on the ball and gets into the final third with purpose. At the stage we’re in, you need a goal like the one we scored. It’s one of those moments where you hope for a burst of energy onto the pitch, something that hasn’t been there for the last three or four weeks. We then gifted the opponent a free kick over three or four occasions. After the break, they scored the 2-1, Darmstadt let us back into the game, and they pushed the lead back over the line. All in all, the victory for Darmstadt is fair.“

Matej Maglica:

„With my own goal, it just happened incredibly fast that the ball came to my head and I tried to clear it somehow. If I’d let it through, I don’t know what would have happened. But the game lasts 90 minutes, that’s the good thing about football. You can always make up for your mistakes. And oh, I was able to reward myself with my goal up front. I think the only thing we can blame ourselves for today is that we left a lot of scoring chances on the table. I can’t list them all now, but we certainly had five clear-cut chances that we simply have to convert. Not five, but two have to go in and then we could have had an easier time at the back.“

Marco Richter:

„I’m very happy with the entire team performance. We deservedly came away with the win. The team spirit is fantastic. I already had a good feeling about set pieces during the game, and then the free kick was perfect for a right-footed player. I’m delighted that I finally scored and netted my first goal for Darmstadt. I’m happy with the three points because it was a really exciting match. We had one or two more high-quality chances that we need to discuss. But there will be some great music playing in the dressing room now, and everyone is simply happy that we were able to win this top match. We defended really well in the end. I’m also happy for Matej that he still managed to score after that unfortunate incident. What makes us special is that we support each other. I always give my best. And tonight was a really great evening. A goal and an assist feel great. The three points are very important. I want to keep playing exactly like this.“
