Lilies Comeback to Claim a Point

Despite trailing 2-0 at halftime, Darmstadt fought back to earn a point in Braunschweig. Matej Maglica's brace after the break provided a morale boost, extending SV 98's unbeaten run to twelve league matches.

In the opening stages, the hosts had the better of the play and created the first two dangerous chances of the match, but both Opoku in the 11th minute and then Ehlers in the 12th were thwarted by good saves from Marcel Schuhen. Shortly afterwards, Darmstadt also had their first opportunity: After a long ball, Luca Marseiler slipped the ball through to Killian Corredor, whose shot was saved by Hoffmann in the Braunschweig goal with his foot after 14 minutes.

As the game progressed, Darmstadt continued to show promise, but ultimately made the wrong decisions, allowing Braunschweig to clear the ball. Their best chance up to that point fell to Corredor after a long pass from Kai Klefisch, but the Frenchman was once again denied by Hoffmann just last the half our mark. Five minutes later, Patric Pfeiffer had a golden opportunity to put Darmstadt ahead, but his header sailed just over the bar.

Right in the middle of Darmstadt’s dominant spell, the home side were awarded a penalty for some shirt pulling in the area: Schuhen guessed the right way but couldn’t stop Aydin’s well-placed shot, 4 minutes before the interval. In stoppage time, Darmstadt were caught cold again when, after a long throw-in, Gomez made it 2-0 for the hosts.

Shortly after the restart, Braunschweig had another good opportunity, but Fabian Nürnberger was alert and prevented Mijatovic from getting a shot off. After that, the away side took control of the game and patiently worked towards their own goal. In the 56th minute, the 98ers finally got their reward: Following a short corner, Sergio López delivered a perfectly weighted cross into the box, and Matej Maglica headed the ball into the net to pull one back.

The next good chances fell to the home side again, but Schuhen was equal to the task each time and prevented another goal. The home side repeatedly created good spells of attacking play, but too rarely managed to get into dangerous scoring positions.

In the 78th minute, the superiority of the 98ers led to the equaliser: López delivered a cross into the middle, Corredor flicked it on, and at the far post, Maglica volleyed the ball home to make it 2-2.

Both teams tried to force a winning goal in the closing stages, but no further goals were scored, and the match ended in a draw.

A second-division team on the Berlin Mount Olympus: Hannover 96 achieved something unique in 1992. On May 23, the Lower Saxony club defeated Borussia Mönchengladbach in the DFB Cup final, securing another major title in the club's history 38 years after their German championship win in 1954.
