The game day quote

It makes no sense to make big declarations of war. My boys are well prepared and know that they have to surpass themselves. We're hoping for the moments against Bayern where we want to have our chance. It is precisely in these moments that we have to show efficiency.

A guest performance as a lifesaver

The final score between the Lilies and FC Bayern Munich was 5:11. Looking back on games against the record champions, this one game remains a very special memory. It’s almost 16 years ago now. But one at a time. On March 12, 2008, SV Darmstadt 98 had to officially apply for the opening of insolvency proceedings. The club was insolvent. But with cohesion and unity, the then Hessian league champions resisted the threat of insolvency.

The income from a charity game against Bayern Munich also contributed to the rescue. In front of a completely sold-out house on Bölle, 19,800 spectators watched a football party with 16 goals in bright sunshine on May 13, 2008. The cheeky Lilies ultimately lost to Ottmar Hitzfeld’s team 5:11. But the game looked completely different at times. The Lilies led 4-2 after just over half an hour. But then Bayern lived up to their reputation as heavy favorites and turned the game around, led by Jan Schlaudraff with seven goals. Lukas Podolski (38th), Breno (45th), Daniel van Buyten (60th) and Bastian Schweinsteiger (77th) were also successful. For Gerhard Kleppinger’s team, Rudi Hübner (22nd), Sebastian Glasner (27th), Alvano Kröh (30th), Michael Anicic (36th) and Ahmet Sahinler entered the scoresheet as goal scorers in the last minute of the game.

A lavish football festival at the Bölle came to an end, which offered the fans a great experience and the club important income. “We are on the right track,” said Darmstadt President Hans Kessler at the time, summing up the situation. On the other hand, Bastian Schweinsteiger, midfielder in Munich’s service, praised the opposition’s performance: „The people here were very good today“ and gave the SVD the rating „ready for the second division“. Now both meet in the Bundesliga.

Opposition Check: SpVgg Greuther Fürth

It was the sixth matchday of the 2017/18 season, a sunny Sunday in September, and the second division fixture between SpVgg Greuther Fürth and Fortuna Düsseldorf was on the schedule. With Florian Neuhaus, Friedhelm Funkel, and Serdar Dursun on or off the pitch, the duel ended 3-1 for Fürth – thanks in part to a brace from Dursun. At first glance, probably just a typical second division victory. But historically significant and unforgettable for everyone in Fürth.

On their home turf, the young Lilies drew 1-1 against TSV Eintracht Stadtallendorf last Saturday (April 11th). Looking at the league table, it was clear even before the match that it wouldn't be easy, as a full ten places separated the two teams in the LOTTO Hessenliga standings. It happened in their 15th home game of the season. Darmstadt lost on their own turf. Deservedly so. Although SV 98 tried everything against the visitors from Hannover until the final whistle, the Lower Saxons proved too strong on Saturday evening. In our analysis, we take another look at the match.
