“That was a victory of passion.”

Fight, dedication, efficiency, an outstanding Marcel Schuhen, and also the necessary dose of luck. These were the ingredients for Darmstadt's cup upset against SV Elversberg. The players were overjoyed afterward, having fought their way to the next round against the favoured Bundesliga side.

Florian Kohfeldt:

„You can imagine how happy I am about our advancement today. It was a victory born of passion. We wanted to put on a real cup fight, that was our goal, and that’s exactly what we did. Of course, to be fair, we also have to acknowledge that we had to weather many critical situations, especially in the first half and at the beginning of the second, situations that you probably don’t always survive. We were incredibly efficient on set pieces, with an absolutely stunning goal from Lars Kehl, which I’m personally very happy about. The second goal also came from a set piece, from a well-rehearsed routine.

Nevertheless, I’d like to conclude by saying that, without a doubt, SV Elversberg was the better team in terms of play. I said before the game that I would love to see them in the Bundesliga, and I have enormous respect for SVE. Today, our game plan worked – with passion, with intensity, and with that little bit of luck that you also need in a cup match. That’s why we’re looking forward to the next round. Now we’re focusing on our very, very important game against Magdeburg.“

Vincent Wagner:

„Congratulations on a well-deserved qualification. Darmstadt were on point. We weren’t that far off a good performance, especially up until the 75th minute. We made two small mistakes in our play, which were brutally punished. We shook it off, pushed forward again with great energy, and created a multitude of scoring opportunities. Even going 2-0 down didn’t throw us off our game, but from the 70th minute onwards, we started to run out of steam a bit.“

Florian Kleinhansl:

„The start was almost perfect, if you disregard Nico’s injury. Later, Lars scored the opening goal with his free kick, and then it was clear: ‚Okay, now we have to fight back. If we can hold on, we’ll advance.‘ We did everything we could today. Of course, it would have been preferable if we’d had more relief, more possession, and been a bit more clinical. Then we could have kept the game a little further away from our goal. As it was, it was a tough match and a lot of hard work today, but we’ll take it with us.“

Lars Kehl:

„The 1-0 start was obviously fantastic. It did us a world of good as a team. We took advantage of that opening goal and then simply defended everything as a team and took control of the situation. To win against Elversberg without conceding a goal in the situation we’re currently in is a statement. We’ve gained confidence and we need to carry that forward. The way we won should also give us a good feeling, because we know we can win without conceding against a top-class team.“
