„They have physically outgrown us.“

They fought to the very end, playing with ten men, and tried everything. But in the end, Darmstadt had to settle for a 3-3 draw against SV Elversberg in the sold-out Merck Stadium at Böllenfalltor. How do the Darmstadt players and staff assess the passionate 90 minutes at the Bölle? What did both head coaches have to say about the match? We've compiled all the reactions for you.

Florian Kohfeldt:

„The first few minutes didn’t feel so good, but we got into the game better with the quickfire double. And then we conceded two goals that should never have happened. Then came the worst-case scenario just before halftime with the red card and the resulting goal to make it 3-2. We went into halftime with a brutal setback, but we regrouped and, in my opinion, played an extremely good second half. Those 45 minutes showed me once again the strong foundation this club has, the foundation on which it stands and always will. To deliver such a performance against such a top-class team, one that poses problems for every opponent in this league, especially playing with ten men, is incredibly impressive. We pushed ourselves beyond our physical limits, we ran hard, and we were always there for each other. Nevertheless, to be honest, this point isn’t enough to put any more pressure on the top three. But it was an incredibly awesome evening at the Bölle. This is how second-division football on a Saturday night can be truly enjoyable.“

Vincent Wagner:

„What more could a football fan ask for! We actually started the game well, then suddenly we were 2-0 down, but we came back very strong, and I’m very proud of my team. We shouldn’t be too critical; the lads managed to turn things around from 2-0 down to 3-2 up. A point is a point. In the second half, you could feel the magic of the Bölle stadium. During that period, you wouldn’t have guessed we had an extra man. The opposition defended with great passion and still managed to get into pressing situations. We need to play with more composure, but that also takes an opponent, and they were running like two men at times today. They really gave us a hard time, and we had to fight. In the end, we battled to a 3-3 draw.“

Marcel Schuhen:

„It was a completely wild game. What happened after halftime is extremely important, in my opinion. The lads gave it their all while playing with ten men, that was really good. It was a strong performance from the team, the coaching staff, the support staff – simply from everyone at the Bölle today. Elversberg is a strong team, and they showed that again today. But we ran until we had blisters and then we deserved the point.“

Paul Fernie:

„It was an absolutely top-class match for me. Two teams desperately wanted to win. It was a goal fest with six goals. Everything was possible, but I’m incredibly proud of the team and how we fought back in the second half. The way we presented ourselves was truly a Darmstadt 98 performance. A team that fights for everything, that absolutely shows the passion and the will to win the game. There were moments where we could have defended better, but the important thing is: we stuck with it, especially after the red card. With ten men on the pitch and the many chances we had in the end, I can only be satisfied.“

Opposition Check: SV Elversberg

In the world of football, a yo-yo team is a team that oscillates between two leagues – too good for one league, but not quite at the level of the next higher one. The result is usually many promotions and many relegations. But SV Elversberg is currently redefining the term. For several years now, the yo-yo has been taking SVE almost exclusively upwards.
