Transfer News: Richter returns to SV 98

A familiar face is returning to SV 98: The "Lilies" have signed Marco Richter. The 28-year-old previously played for the South Hessian club on loan last season. Richter had agreed to the termination of his contract with 1. FSV Mainz 05 on September 1st, making it possible to sign the attacking midfielder even after the transfer window had closed.

Paul Fernie: „We never lost touch with Marco after his loan spell ended, though we didn’t see a realistic opportunity to sign him during the transfer window. Following the change in his situation after his contract was terminated in Mainz, we stepped up our contact earlier this week and found a way to bring Marco back to Darmstadt. His qualities are undisputed, and he proved last season that he can be a key player for our team. We are therefore delighted to welcome Marco back into the fold.“

Marco Richter: „I’ve often said how comfortable I felt during my year with the Lilies. That’s why I never completely ruled out the idea of returning to Darmstadt, even though there were no concrete talks about it over the past few months. Various options opened up after the transfer window closed, but after speaking with Paul and Flo, I quickly realised that I saw my future with the Lilies. Now I’m really looking forward to sharing the pitch with familiar faces and getting to know the new players as soon as possible.“

Last season, Richter made 32 competitive appearances for SV 98, recording twelve goal involvements.

Born in Friedberg, he came up through the youth ranks at clubs including Bayern Munich and FC Augsburg. He broke into the first team at FCA, playing 102 competitive matches—97 of them in the Bundesliga. Between August 2021 and August 2024, Richter made another 79 top-flight appearances for Hertha BSC and 1. FSV Mainz 05. During the 2024/25 season, the right-footed player was on loan at Hamburger SV, featuring in 28 competitive matches.

Richter will wear the number 5 shirt.
