Opposition Check: Nürnberg

Missing stars and broken records: 1. FC Nürnberg looks back on an eventful club history that has repeatedly produced extraordinary moments. This Saturday afternoon (November, 7th), SV Darmstadt 98 will be the visitors to the "Club." That’s reason enough to take a closer look at their upcoming opponent.

1. FC Nürnberg is one of the most storied clubs in German football. Although „der Club“—as it is known in the Franconia region—no longer regularly competes for major titles today, it looks back on an exceptionally successful past. The club’s most prosperous era took place in the 1920s; between 1920 and 1927, FCN secured five German championship titles, leaving a lasting mark on an entire generation of football. With a total of nine championship titles, Nürnberg remains the second most successful German club, trailing only FC Bayern Munich. However, only one championship star is displayed on the team’s jersey.

That glorious past now lies several decades in the past. In 1968, Nürnberg celebrated what remains its most recent German championship. Just one year later, the team suffered a surprising relegation from the Bundesliga. To this day, FCN remains the only reigning German champion to have been relegated to the second division the following season. This marked the beginning of a turbulent history for the club, characterised by numerous promotions and relegations. While the Franconian side has managed to return to the Bundesliga time and again, it has never been able to establish itself there permanently. Yet, one thing has remained constant throughout the years: the club’s deep connection to its home region and a loyal fan base that has stood by „der Club“ even through the most difficult times.

Current Form

1. FC Nürnberg can look back on a successful start to the season. After ten matchdays, the „Club“ has already accumulated 21 points, currently securing them second place in the league table.

Highlight

This season, 1. FC Nürnberg is among the teams that frequently look to shoot from distance. In doing so, the „Club“ has shown a keen eye for goal, having already scored five times from outside the penalty area. Adam Markhiev has been particularly clinical, contributing three of those five goals himself.

All Eyes on Adam Markhiev

August 29, 2026, proved to be an exceptional day for Adam Markhiev. In 1. FC Nürnberg’s 4–1 home victory over Arminia Bielefeld, the midfielder scored twice, earning the title of man of the match. The 24-year-old had already demonstrated his quality in the preceding weeks, though his path to Nürnberg was anything but conventional. Markhiev grew up in Finland, where he gained his initial footballing experience with Klubi 04. After his time in the youth ranks, he moved to Latvia to join FK Spartaks Jūrmala. Following stints in various countries and further experience in senior-level football, he eventually made his way to Germany in 2025—marking the beginning of a new chapter for the Finn at 1. FC Nürnberg.

It quickly became clear that he would settle in well, as he made 26 league appearances in his debut season, contributing one goal and one assist. He has since become an indispensable part of the Nürnberg squad; after just seven matchdays this season, he has already tallied three goals and two assists. He is particularly dangerous from long range, having scored three times this season with shots from outside the box. Combined with his strength in duels and his commanding presence in midfield, these attributes make him a vital component of Nürnberg’s style of play.

His coach is well aware of his value, viewing Markhiev as the heart of the team. In a short span of time, the player who arrived in Nürnberg in 2025 has established himself as a key figure. Future opponents would do well to keep a close eye on him.
