Young Lilies suffer narrow defeat in Fernwald

Last Saturday (October 31st), SV Darmstadt 98’s U21 side suffered a narrow 1-0 (1-0) defeat away to FSV Fernwald. Despite maintaining good control of the game for long stretches, the Young Lilies were unable to make a decisive breakthrough in the final third.

Early substitution due to injury

The match began with an early setback for the Darmstadt side: just twelve minutes in, Diogo dos Santos Pereira had to be substituted due to injury, with Toni Hartelt taking his place. As the game progressed, the Young Lilies maintained control for long stretches, allowing their opponents very few opportunities. Nevertheless, shortly before the halftime whistle, the hosts managed to score what would ultimately prove to be the decisive goal: in the 38th minute, Nicola Jürgens put FSV Fernwald 1–0 ahead. Both teams headed into the dressing rooms with this scoreline.

Few attacking options

After the break, the Darmstadt side tried to apply more pressure and make the match more competitive. However, they lacked the necessary cutting edge in the final third to find an equaliser. Mark Meier had the best opportunity in the 64th minute, but his shot failed to result in a goal. Despite the efforts of the Young Lilies, the match ended in a narrow defeat.

Nevertheless, coach Patrick Kurt felt his team put in a decent performance: „Despite the loss, I can certainly be satisfied with the team’s display. It was a game with few chances, yet we remained largely stable and managed some good spells of possession—though we didn’t create a flurry of scoring opportunities.“ At the same time, Kurt emphasised that the team intends to stay on its current path: „We will continue to focus on refining our style of play, and we remain committed to our approach of fielding a very young squad. In fact, against Fernwald, there were once again six players on the pitch who are still eligible to play for the U19s.“

League Table Situation and Outlook

Following this defeat, the U21s remain on 24 points, placing them eighth in the Lotto Hessenliga standings. With one matchday still to go before the end of the first half of the season, the Young Lilies are already in a better position than they were at the same stage last season, when they had 22 points to their name.

Patrick Kurt’s side will have little time to catch their breath: this coming Sunday (November 8th), the Darmstadt team will host FC Eddersheim, aiming to pick up points once again in front of a home crowd.

Line-Up: Ebert – Ballmert, Meier (Maier, 88′), Keranovic, Hofer (Held, 62′), Dos Santos Pereira (Hartelt, 12′), Carolei (Volkmann, 69′), Stark, Carolei, Dreskovic, Stark, Merx, Pfister, Herbst
