U21: Bitter defeat against Hünfelder SV

For the SV Darmstadt 98 U21 team, their home game against Hünfelder SV in the LOTTO Hessenliga last Saturday (October 11th) turned out to be a bitter afternoon. The young Lilies suffered a resounding 5-0 defeat and learned that the Hessenliga requires not only quality play, but also robustness and toughness in duels.

Good start, but then two blows to the neck

The Lilies got off to a good start. The hosts boldly tried to build the game from the back. But Hünfeld disrupted the game early on, forcing the Lilies into repeated errors. After a long ball into the Lilies‘ penalty area, the visitors were able to assert themselves and take a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute. The visitors continued to play effectively and scored again shortly before halftime with an attack down the left flank – 2-0, the halftime score from Hünfelder SV’s perspective.

Learn from mistakes

After the break, the 98ers suffered another setback. HSV scored in the 46th minute, extending their lead to 3-0. By then, the game was already decided, with Hünfeld controlling the game from then on. The visitors cleverly exploited their physical superiority, winning the decisive duels, and adding two more goals in the 69th and 89th minutes to seal the two points.

U21 head coach Daniel Petrowsky was visibly disappointed after the match: „We simply have to make sure we embrace the football that’s being demanded. At the moment, we’re winning too few duels, and we often can’t assert ourselves.“ For the Lilies‘ U21 team, the 5-0 defeat was a very painful, but also instructive, defeat. The team had to realise that they can only prevail against robust and experienced opponents if they become more consistent in their tackling.

After this decisive defeat, the team must respond in their next match, which the Junglilien hope to achieve next Saturday (October 18th) away at FSV Fernwald. Kick-off is at 3 p.m. on the artificial turf pitch on Oppenröder Straße in Fernwald.

With a team as young as ours, a game like this can happen. Nevertheless, we're obviously not at all satisfied.

Daniel Petrowsky, head coach of the U21 team, told sv98.de

Line Up: Rohde, Kunstmann, Pfister, Karakaya (Görtler, 76′), Arnold, Ballmert, Klappich (Zaatan, 55′), Herbst (Schnerring, 83′), Rebner (Mignano, 55′), Schlosser, Kadrijaj (Jaadar, 55′)
