U21 wins again: „We have it in our own hands“
Upward trend! On Saturday (May 9th/3pm), SV Darmstadt 98's U21 team hosted FSV Fernwald in the Lotto Hessenliga for the 30th matchday. Still embroiled in the fight to avoid relegation, the young Lilies secured three crucial points. They triumphed 4-1 over Fernwald – a victory that was particularly well-deserved in the final stages. This means the U21 team has won three of their last four league matches.
It's working again for the U21 team.
A strong first half. The young Lilies needed less than 20 minutes to take a 1-0 lead: Luis Klappich opened the scoring in the 18th minute, kicking off a four-goal performance for the U21s. Manolo Merx then doubled the lead to 2-0 in the 33rd minute. He also contributed an assist in this match, bringing his total to five scorer points in the last two games. The young Lilies went into halftime with a well-deserved 2-0 lead.
From then on, the U21s focused on counter-attacking opportunities and consistently executed them well – from winning the ball to finishing. „It worked well both with and without the ball today,“ analysed U21 coach Sebastian Schmitt. However, Fernwald pulled one back from a set piece, making it 2-1 in the 59th minute. But the young Lilies have learned to cope with adversity. „The reaction to conceding was good,“ praised Schmitt.
And how! Two further goals from Smail Kadrijaj and Luigi Mignano made it 3-1 (73rd minute) and 4-1 (85th minute). Goals that sealed the third victory in the last four games and gave a huge confidence boost. After this important three points, the young Lilies no longer need help from other teams in their fight to avoid relegation. „We have it in our own hands for the next three weeks,“ the coach summarised, but cautioned: „Of course, we still have to win games!“
We know we can do it. And that's exactly how we'll proceed to Hanau.
The third-to-last match of the season is scheduled for this coming Saturday (May 16th/3pm): The team aims to take the next step towards securing their place in the league away against 1. Hanauer FC. „We all know that we can only achieve this together. The team trusts the coaching staff, and we trust the team,“ Schmitt concluded.
