Away Win! After a 3-0 deficit!

After 40 minutes, no one had given a damn about the Lilies: And yet SV 98 triumphed after being 3-0 down! The South Hesse team won 5:3 (1:3) at FC Schalke 04. Hornby, a hat trick from Lidberg and López crowned an incredible comeback.

The Lilies‘ away game against Schalke was quite even in the opening minutes and without many chances on both sides. In the 14th minute of the game, the hosts were awarded a free kick on the edge of the penalty area with Mohr opening the scoring as he clipped the ball over the wall and into the back of the net.

In the 23rd minute, Killian Corredor tried from distance and Schalke keeper Heekeren could only push the ball out but gathered it again with Hornby lurking. Three minutes later, Isac Lidberg tried from a good 16 meters, but didn’t cause any problems for the keeper with his low shot.

Overall, there were few highlights at first, but the hosts still made it 2-0 after 34 minutes: Sylla saw an effort deflect onto the post, Schuhen denied him a second time but the forward was still able to squeeze the ball home. It was 3-0, 5 minutes later as Ron Schallenburg hooked the ball home.

The Lilies were able to get on the scoresheet in the fifth minute of added time. A corner was handled by Sylla and after a brief check on VAR, a penalty was awarded which Fraser Hornby converted to grab his first goal for the club.

The 98ers started the second half powerfully and tried to get back into the game quickly. However, Schalke initially had the good finishes, but Younes (51st) and Karaman (53rd) failed due to the saves from Schuhen.

On the other side, the Lilies countered – and scored: Marseiler artistically placed the ball across to Lidberg, who pushed it over the line to make it 2-3 (56th). Just two minutes later, Lidberg tried again, but his attempt landed in the arms of the keeper (58th).

The Darmstadt team continued to push and equalised after 76 minutes: Lidberg dribbled towards the goal from the left and bent the ball into the top corner to make it 3-3. Shortly afterwards, substitute Tobias Kempe had a chance to put us into the lead but he fired over the top on 78 minutes.

Three minutes before the end of the game, the Lilies crowned their comeback: following a corner, Lidberg swivelled and found the bottom corer to make it 4-3 for the South Hesse team (87th) – a flawless hat trick from the Swede. In stoppage time, Sergio López put the final point under the game and, after an assist from Fynn Lakenmacher, made the final score 5:3 in the 7th minute of added time.

Disappointment & pride

Darmstadt's 2-1 defeat at Karlsruher SC also ended any remaining theoretical hopes the South Hessian club had of finishing the season in the top three. The loss at the Wildpark stadium served somewhat as a symbol for the past few weeks, during which SV 98 had only managed one point from five matches since the international break in March. Following the game on Sunday afternoon, the Darmstadt players addressed the assembled media representatives with mixed feelings.
