In the first quarter of an hour, spectators were treated to a largely evenly matched game in which neither team was able to make a clear impact. The Lilies had three shots, but they weren’t dangerous. Soares had the first shot for Nürnberg after 19 minutes, but his long-range effort flew just wide.

In the 24th minute, Marco Richter came close to giving SVD the lead: Following a cross from Luca Marseiler, the new signing volleyed the ball but was denied by a strong save from Reichert in the home team’s goal. The Lilies had a slight advantage overall, but the South Hesse side couldn’t capitalise.

The game remained rather uneventful until halftime. Both teams neutralised each other for long stretches, and significant scoring opportunities were rare. Thus, the halftime break came without any major highlights.

After the break, the best chance of the game up to that point: Kai Klefisch played Hiroki Akiyama free in the penalty area, and the Japanese player aimed for the far corner, but keeper Reichert also parried this attempt, 3 minutes after the break. At the other end, substitute Telalovic also had a chance, but from a good position he couldn’t get the ball on target.

The game picked up significantly in the second half, but after the early chances, there were no clear shots on goal from either side. It wasn’t until just over an hour later that the danger returned: Following a free kick, Clemens Riedel fired the ball over the bar from a promising position in the 62nd minute. Shortly thereafter, the hosts had room for a counterattack, but Marcel Schuhen confidently parried Janisch’s shot.

Twenty minutes before the end, another double-double of chances came: First, Fabian Nürnberger’s long-range shot was saved by the keeper (70′), then Telalovic put the ball wide of the goal at the other end (71′). The hosts‘ best attempt came five minutes later, but Schuhen prevented the goal with a strong reflex save from a header by Robin Knoche.

In the closing stages, Nürnberg pushed harder for the lead, but in the 88th minute, Marcel Schuhen saved his team with a brilliant save, deflecting Gruber’s powerful header onto the crossbar. In the fourth minute of stoppage time, the Lilies then landed a lucky punch: Fraser Hornby cut the ball into the path of Killian Corredor, who decisively entered the penalty area and secured the 1-0 away win with a precise shot.

Darmstadt's 2-1 defeat at Karlsruher SC also ended any remaining theoretical hopes the South Hessian club had of finishing the season in the top three. The loss at the Wildpark stadium served somewhat as a symbol for the past few weeks, during which SV 98 had only managed one point from five matches since the international break in March. Following the game on Sunday afternoon, the Darmstadt players addressed the assembled media representatives with mixed feelings.
