Established in the top group

After a resounding 6-1 defeat against Braunschweig in their season opener, 1. FC Magdeburg quickly found their form. They followed this with five wins and a draw, although they also suffered a narrow defeat against league leaders Hertha BSC. The prestigious „Elbe Clásico“ against Dynamo Dresden was also lost. Nevertheless, with 16 points, Magdeburg sits in fifth place in the 2. Bundesliga table, placing them among the top teams.

Magdeburg's attack is running at full speed

In their 6-1 victory against Karlsruhe last Saturday, 1. FC Magdeburg impressively demonstrated their attacking prowess. With 20 goals this season, FCM is among the most prolific teams in the 2. Bundesliga. Only Wolfsburg with 23 and Nürnberg with 21 goals have scored more. Magdeburg’s frequent success is also due to their clinical finishing: one in seven shots on goal finds the back of the net.

Counterkings from Magdeburg

1. FC Magdeburg particularly excels at exploiting its strengths in fast counter-attacks. Although the Elbe-based team has only managed eleven shots on goal from counter-attacks so far, four of these attempts have found the back of the net. This makes them the most dangerous counter-attacking team in the league. Magdeburg also occupies a top position when looking at individual players: Emmanuel Iyoha and Mateusz Zukowski have each scored twice from quick counter-attacks. No other player in the 2. Bundesliga has been more successful in this regard.

The Lilies feel at home.

On matchday 10, Darmstadt will once again play in front of their home crowd and aim to collect more points at the Böllenfalltor stadium. All eight of SV Darmstadt 98’s points so far this season have been earned at their own ground. With eighth place in the home table, their record in front of their own fans is significantly better than away, where the Hessian side is still without a point (although they did manage a midweek cup victory against SV Elversberg).

The goals conceded tally is misleading.

Darmstadt have conceded 18 goals so far this season, 15 of them from open play. However, their defence is significantly more difficult to penetrate from set pieces. A look at the expected goals (xG) reveals that the team from southern Hesse could have conceded fewer: based on the opponent’s xG value of 13.4, a much lower number of goals against them would have been expected. Instead, opponents are particularly clinical in front of goal against Darmstadt. No other team boasts a higher finishing efficiency.
