Figures & facts: The top facts about the Wolfsburg game

The Lilies' next away duel is on Saturday (May 4/3:30pm). This time Torsten Lieberknecht's team is traveling to Lower Saxony to VfL Wolfsburg. The 98ers want to say goodbye to the Bundesliga with their heads held high and also give their fans three great Bundesliga games. The first positive experience should now take place in Wolfsburg. There is still some pressure on the wolves, although Ralph Hasenhüttl's team is in 12th place, but the relegation place is only six points away. Before the Darmstadt team goes all out again in Wolfsburg, you can find all the important facts about the game here. What gives hope for the next away win? What are the strengths of VfL from Wolfsburg? And which lily celebrated its Bundesliga debut for the Wolves? You can find out in our top facts about the game.

Genius and madness combined: Maxence Lacroix

On the one hand, the 24-year-old has already scored four goals this season, the most among all defenders, and on the other hand, Maxence Lacroix has already received three dismissals this season. This was also the case in the first leg, when the Frenchman received a red card in the 27th minute for a foul as the last defender. Last weekend the central defender showed his different face again, in the 90th minute Lacroix scored from 25 meters with a 121 km/h shot for the 2-1 winning goal at FC Freiburg.

Strong running wolves

Furthermore, VfL’s running and sprinting performance is a real strength of Lower Saxony. The Wolfsburg team were already at the top of the statistics here last season and that hasn’t changed this year either. With 24,561 intensive runs, coach Ralph Hasenhüttl’s team has almost 900 more intensive runs than second-placed Eintracht Frankfurt. VfL also presents itself strongly in the sprints category, with 7,657 sprints the Wolves are in second place in the league, only 1. FC Heidenheim is a bit better here.

Goal spectacle rather unlikely

The fans and spectators should probably expect a somewhat defensive game on Saturday afternoon. With 26 big chances each, both teams are ranked 17th in the Bundesliga in this statistic. However, Ralph Hasenhüttl will certainly be pleased that his team took advantage of 14 of these great chances. With 30 and 37 goals respectively, both clubs are in the bottom third of the league in terms of goals scored, and this definitely does not meet their own standards, especially on the Wolfsburg side. The close first game result in the Bölle, when the Wolves won 1-0, also underlines the statistics.

Suspensions Looming

Torsten Lieberknecht will not have to do without any player suspended for yellow on Saturday (04/05/15:30) in Wolfsburg. Emir Karic and Jannik Müller both have four warnings each, so they have to be careful that they are not suspended against Hoffenheim. Central defender Sebstiaan Bornauw is missing from the host side; the 25-year-old picked up his fifth card in the 90+3 minute in the last game against Freiburg.

Encounter with the old club

It could certainly have been a special game for Bartol Franjic on Saturday. The 24-year-old is on loan to the Lilies from VfL Wolfsburg this season, but the Croatian has already been able to collect his first Bundesliga minutes in the Lower Saxony jersey. In the summer of 2022, the midfielder moved from Dinamo Zagreb to VfL, and in the 2022/23 season he played five games for the Wolves due to some injury problems. Franjic has appeared 20 times at SVD this season, but has to sit out injured on Saturday.

Goalkeeper Alexander Brunst also wore the Wolfsburg jersey; the 28-year-old was active in the second team from 2015 to 2017. Julian Justvan was also with the second representative; he played for the Wolves from 2017 to 2020.

Sebastian Polter spent the longest time in Lower Saxony. The striker already played for VfL in his youth and joined the U17 team in 2007. Polter also made his professional debut for Wolfsburg in the 2011/12 season. The now 33-year-old played a total of 12 Bundesliga games with the Wolves, in which he scored two goals.

We realised how important this exchange is after the Augsburg game and are generally of the opinion that we have to constantly develop, improve and design many things together at the rebuilt Bölle. We would therefore like to focus on the various stands at intervals during our fan evenings in the future. And then we use the collected results and experiences to create the overall stadium experience „Böllenfalltor“.

Opposition Check: Borussia Dortmund

Almost 30 points behind the German champions Bayer Leverkusen, which means they are only fifth in the Bundesliga. Add to that the elimination against VfB Stuttgart in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup: If you look at Borussia Dortmund's record in the national competitions this season, there is little euphoria. On the other hand, BVB will be in the Champions League final against Real Madrid at Wembley Stadium in London in two and a half weeks. It's a season in which Dortmund shows two completely different faces. The last few weeks have been the best example of this: Borussia did not concede a goal against the star ensemble from Paris St. Germain in over 180 minutes, and last weekend they conceded three goals after 23 minutes against Mainz 05. Before the last Bundesliga game of the season, we take a closer look at Borussia Dortmund.

Fine for SV 98

The sports court of the German Football Association (DFB) has imposed a fine of 25,000 on SV 98. The reason for the penalty is two incidents from the home game against VfB Stuttgart (February 17). On the one hand, the DFB sanctioned the throwing of tennis balls with 20,000 euros, and on the other hand, the sports court punished the pouring of a drink on a person from the referee team with a fine of 5,000 euros.
