From the start, the U21 team made it clear that they were determined to keep the three points at home. Despite fewer chances on either side, the young Lilies were well-involved in the first half and enjoyed more possession. This paid off shortly before the break: After a corner was cleared, Henry Held scored the opening goal for Darmstadt on the rebound in added time at the end of the first half.
Despite the halftime lead, the U21 team didn’t let up in the second half and kept their foot on the gas. Viktor Grgic scored the second goal for the Lilies immediately after the break two minutes after the break. Waldgirmes then attempted to force a goal back with numerous high balls into the box, but there was no way past the Darmstadt defense. Two well-executed counterattacks by Mateo Zelic in the 83rd and Marcel Kuhlmann 89th minutes secured the clear home victory.
The young Lilies now have a weekend off before they host league leaders RW Walldorf at home in a top game one week later (March 29).
