„Showed as a team that we are fully on our game“
The Lilies remain unbeaten for the third consecutive home game, sharing the points with Bundesliga-relegated FC St. Pauli on Friday evening. Here is what was said after the match:
A floodlit match at the Böllenfalltor: On Friday evening (Oct 23rd), SV Darmstadt 98 will host FC St. Pauli as part of the ninth matchday of the 2. Bundesliga. But St. Pauli is no stranger to floodlit games—it was on just such a night back in 2002 that they earned themselves the unofficial title of "conquerors of the world club champions."
Millerntor, February 6, 2002. On one side, the bottom-placed team in the Bundesliga, FC St. Pauli. On the other, the newly crowned Intercontinental Cup champions, FC Bayern Munich. The roles seemed clearly defined, and the chances of a home win for the Hamburg side appeared virtually non-existent. Yet, that evening, club history was written.
In the span of just three minutes, the Kiezkicker managed to catch FC Bayern off guard in front of some 20,000 spectators. During this stretch, Thomas Meggle scored first, followed by Nico Patschinski, giving the team a 2–0 lead. Bayern narrowed the gap to 2–1 through a Willy Sagnol goal in the 87th minute, but the brown-and-white defence held firm until the final whistle. It was a resounding victory—and with it, the „conquerors of the Intercontinental Cup champions“ were born.
The start of the season has gone quite well for FC St. Pauli so far: they have collected eleven points from their first eight matches and currently sit in seventh place in the table.

Head coach of FC St. PauliSt. Pauli applies pressure where it hurts the most: during the opponent’s build-up play. Rather than waiting to defend near their own penalty area, the Kiezkicker look to force errors and turnovers high up the pitch. Once they win the ball, things turn dangerous: the ball is moved forward quickly and vertically. This combination of aggression and rapid transitions makes life difficult for their opponents.
From The Gambia to Estonia, and now at the Millerntor—taking center stage: Abdoulie Ceesay. The 22-year-old has made a name for himself with the Kiezkicker. With four goals in seven matches, he currently stands as FC St. Pauli’s top scorer.
His career began at Real de Banjul, followed by a loan move to the Estonian club Paide Linnameeskond in the summer of 2024. He made an immediate impact at his new side, netting 13 goals in 15 league appearances, alongside three goals and two assists in the Conference League qualifiers. He also earned caps for the Gambian national team, scoring early in his international career—his first goal for his country came in a victory against Tunisia. In January of last year, he moved to Hamburg, landing directly in the Bundesliga. Ceesay initially needed some time to find his footing in Germany; he went scoreless in seven appearances during the second half of that season. The following campaign saw him feature in 20 matches, though he never started a game. His only three goals all came in defeats, which ultimately ended in relegation.
This past summer, he turned things around: in a 4-1 friendly win against Babelsberg, the 22-year-old scored a hat-trick in just 28 minutes. He has since carried that form into the 2. Bundesliga, where he now stands as the team’s top scorer with four goals in eight matches.
