Become champion three years in a row? Not many players can do that in their career. Our new signing Paul Will has done it: in 2019 he became regional league champion with Bayern II, in 2020 he won the 3rd league with Munich, and he achieved the same thing again in 2021 with Dynamo Dresden. The defensive midfielder can also draw on second division experience; the left-footed player played 23 games in Bundesliga 2. for the SGD.

After four years in the black and yellow jersey, Will will be taking to the pitch for the Lilies in the future. The 25-year-old is looking forward to his time at the Bölle: „I’m looking forward to the new task in Darmstadt, the preparation with my new team and then especially on the home games.“ With Will, the Lily fans get an absolute fighter. Fighting, scratching, eating grass? „I can definitely identify with that and those are the qualities that helped me become a professional “, says the newcomer about himself. Virtues that are popular at the Bölle make it all the better that Will is looking forward to his new arena: “The stadium is unbelievable!”

In the coming second division season there is also a special duel for the player, the Lilies will meet the cup finalists 1. FC Kaiserslautern again in the 2nd Bundesliga. Will played for the Red Devils in the U17 and U19, led the A-youth team as captain, among other things, and was runner-up in the 2018 cup. “Sure, Kaiserslautern is against my former club. Of course, I’m particularly looking forward to the duel. Many of my former teammates have made the leap to the professionals and there is still a certain bond there. Playing on the Betzenberg will be a huge event,” Will said in a club interview with FC Bayern when promotion to the 3rd league was confirmed in 2019.

The route for the 25-year-old is clear; he and his new team want to put a smile on the faces of the Lilies fans more often. Will’s family will certainly have had a smile when he made the move. For the left-footed man, it’s only about an hour and a half from Darmstadt to his family: „It was definitely something that had a positive influence on my decision-making!“

Welcome to Darmstadt, Paul!

Disappointment & pride

Darmstadt's 2-1 defeat at Karlsruher SC also ended any remaining theoretical hopes the South Hessian club had of finishing the season in the top three. The loss at the Wildpark stadium served somewhat as a symbol for the past few weeks, during which SV 98 had only managed one point from five matches since the international break in March. Following the game on Sunday afternoon, the Darmstadt players addressed the assembled media representatives with mixed feelings.
