The U21 team suffered a defeat against Eddersheim

A bumpy start, good morale, and then a late setback: SV Darmstadt 98's U21 team suffered a bitter defeat at home against FC Eddersheim last weekend. Despite early setbacks, the Lilies showed character and fought their way back into the game with great effort. After 90 intense minutes, however, the hosts narrowly lost 4-3.

Bad start - Good morale

The match couldn’t have started worse for SV Darmstadt 98’s U21 team. Eddersheim’s high pressing game put the Lilies under pressure early on. Just moments after such a pressing action, the visitors were awarded a penalty, which they converted in the 2nd minute to take a 1-0 lead. Barely four minutes later, the Lilies suffered another setback: after Darmstadt goalkeeper Til Rohde could only parry an FCE free kick, Eddersheim pounced on the rebound to make it 2-0. However, the SVD U21s then recovered. They created more space on the counter-attack, and after winning the ball high up the pitch, Smail Kadrijaj pulled one back to make it 2-1 in the 21st minute. But shortly before halftime, the visitors struck again, restoring their two-goal advantage to 3-1 in the 43rd minute.

Despite scoring a brace, it was a setback at the end.

During the break, Darmstadt coach Daniel Petrowsky seemed to have chosen the right words for his team. The Darmstadt players showed great character and came out of the locker room strong. They created two excellent chances after the restart and then struck again in quick succession in the second half. Mika Schlosser (66th minute) and Kian Rebner (70th minute) rewarded Darmstadt with the equaliser, making it 3-3 – both goals coming from Eddersheim’s left flank. However, in the 89th minute, the SV 98 U21 team suffered a bitter and late blow: Eddersheim scored again, sealing the 4-3 defeat for SV Darmstadt 98.

This means the young Lilies are now winless in eight games. With 22 points, they sit in 11th place in the LOTTO Hessenliga after 17 matchdays. Just like the Darmstadt first team, the U21 Darmstadt 98 youth team also has a weekend off. After the break, they will travel to face CSC 03 Kassel, currently in 15th place. Kick-off is at 2:30pm on Sunday (November 23rd) on the artificial turf pitch at Lore-Klitsch-Weg in Kassel.

The way the game unfolded was incredibly frustrating because my team showed so much spirit but still couldn't reward themselves. We have to keep working on ourselves and believe in ourselves.

Daniel Petrowsky, head coach of the U21 team, speaking to sv98.de

Line-Up: Rohde, Kunstmann, Karakaya, Pfister, Arnold, Ballmert, Klappich, Rebner (Görtler, 90+1′), Alagi (Herbst, 82′), Schlosser (Mignano, 88′), Kadrijaj

Darmstadt's 2-1 defeat at Karlsruher SC also ended any remaining theoretical hopes the South Hessian club had of finishing the season in the top three. The loss at the Wildpark stadium served somewhat as a symbol for the past few weeks, during which SV 98 had only managed one point from five matches since the international break in March. Following the game on Sunday afternoon, the Darmstadt players addressed the assembled media representatives with mixed feelings.

Left hook, 'One hundred and eightyyyyyyy', and hand over the baton. Doesn't sound like football – and that's true. KSC is often associated with professional football, but with the sheer number of titles the club has won, it's worth looking beyond the pitch. Titles from Baden-Württemberg to Rome.
