U21: Goal fest against 1. Hanauer FC

In a spectacular Hessenliga clash, the U21s of SV Darmstadt 98 and 1. Hanauer FC drew 4-4. The spectators at the Lilies' youth academy were treated to a veritable goal fest that featured everything that makes a thrilling football match: early goals, lead changes, impressive attacks, and a dramatic finale.

Controlled first half

Darmstadt started strongly and put the visitors under pressure early on. With quick combination play, the Lilies created numerous chances and rewarded themselves with an early lead through Smail Kadrijaj (4th minute). In the seventh minute, the Lilies extended their lead again: Due to a foul in the penalty area, the referee awarded a penalty to the 98ers. Once again, it was Kadrijaj who scored, confidently converting the penalty. But Hanau was unfazed. The team showed fighting spirit and waited for counterattacks. Hanau scored from a set piece in the 44th minute to make it 2-1 – the score remained unchanged at halftime.

Comeback qualities

After the break, the lively scoring continued. Both teams looked to advance rather than settle for the previous score. The visitors quickly equalised (47th minute). Darmstadt then seemed to have the game back under control and took the lead again thanks to a good move by Mika Schlosser (63rd minute). But Hanau showed their courage and repeatedly fought back from set pieces. The visitors responded to Schlosser’s goal just four minutes later, even taking a 3-4 lead in the 80th minute.

Thus, a heated final phase developed – characterised by tackling, high intensity, and chances on both sides. It wasn’t until injury time that the Junglilien finally managed to turn things around. A handball by the visitors in the penalty area prompted the referee to point to the penalty spot again. Kadrijaj again placed the ball on the penalty spot and slotted the penalty into the bottom left corner to make the final score 4-4.

Although the U21s were frustrated about missing out on the three points, the Darmstadt team was proud of their comeback qualities in a fast-paced and emotionally charged match.

This busy week is full of action for the U21s: The Junglilien’s home game against Eintracht Frankfurt’s U21s next weekend will take place on Saturday (October 25th) at the Merck Stadium at Böllenfalltor. Kick-off is at 3:30pm. Feel free to come along and support the Junglilien. Tickets are available at the box office.

We're currently in a phase where we're lacking luck in front of goal and conceding goals far too easily. We need to work on that now.

Daniel Petrowsky, head coach of the U21 team, told sv98.de

Line-Up: Rohde – Schnerring (Kunstmann, 75′), Görtler, Karakaya, Arnold, Ballmert, Klappich, Herbst, Zaatan (Alagi, 68′), Schlosser (Mignano, 68′), Kadrijaj.

Darmstadt's 2-1 defeat at Karlsruher SC also ended any remaining theoretical hopes the South Hessian club had of finishing the season in the top three. The loss at the Wildpark stadium served somewhat as a symbol for the past few weeks, during which SV 98 had only managed one point from five matches since the international break in March. Following the game on Sunday afternoon, the Darmstadt players addressed the assembled media representatives with mixed feelings.

A bitter end in Karlsruhe: After 90 entertaining minutes in which both teams sought salvation in attack, Darmstadt suffered a narrow defeat. The final score was 2-1 after a late goal from the home side, following Isac Lidberg's earlier equaliser. Left hook, 'One hundred and eightyyyyyyy', and hand over the baton. Doesn't sound like football – and that's true. KSC is often associated with professional football, but with the sheer number of titles the club has won, it's worth looking beyond the pitch. Titles from Baden-Württemberg to Rome.
