In the top match of the Lotto Hessenliga, the SV Darmstadt 98 U21 team suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat away at FSV Fernwald. The game got off to a rather slow start for the Lilies – the home team put their South Hessian visitors under pressure early on, forcing them to make mistakes in their build-up play. Nevertheless, the Lilies‘ offensive potential shone through repeatedly: When they outplayed the hosts‘ aggressive pressing, promising opportunities arose – but these remained unused.
The only goal of the game came in the 29th minute from a set piece: a free kick gave Fernwald a 1-0 lead, which they held until the final whistle.
In the second half, SV 98 increasingly took control. The Lilies pressed, pinning Fernwald in their own half at times, and created numerous chances – but the goal just wouldn’t come. The best chance came shortly before the end, when Held hit the crossbar with a powerful shot.
The 1-0 defeat leaves the Lilies‘ second team in third place in the Lotto Hessenliga. Despite the defeat, the team is focused and confident as they look ahead. Next Sunday against Stadtallendorf (April 13th, 3pm), the young Lilies‘ U21 team is looking not only for a return to their luck – they’re also firmly focused on getting back to winning ways.
It would have been nice if our efforts in the second half had been rewarded and we'd taken a point. However, given the second half, we're still happy with our performance.
