U21 loses against Unter-Flockenbach

“An unnecessary defeat,” was the conclusion of U21 head coach Daniel Petrowsky. His team lost 2-1 against SV Unter-Flockenbach in the Hessenliga on Wednesday evening (September 4th). Georgios Makridis scored the goal for SV Darmstadt 98 in the 9th minute of the game.

The U21 boys played a really good game, especially in the first half. The hosts were able to create many chances in the local youth academy and were rewarded with Makridis‘ 1-0 lead after just nine minutes. However, the Darmstadt team subsequently failed to score the second goal. “As in the last few games, exploiting opportunities was our problem,” complained Petrowsky.

“Even if we feel like we have the opponent under control, we have to play our game consistently for 90 minutes and not let the opponent breathe,” the U21 head coach continued. The Lilies were unable to maintain the good performance from the first half over the full distance after the break. Just five minutes after the restart, the South Hesse team conceded the equaliser. “Unfortunately, our negligence was punished in the second half,” said Petrowsky. In the 78th minute, SV Unter-Flockenbach scored the winning goal with a penalty to make the final score 2-1.

The next duel in the Hessenliga will take place on Saturday, September 14th at SV Rot-Weiß Walldorf. Kick-off in Mörfelden-Walldorf is at 3:30pm.

Starting XI: Rohde – Crößmann, Arnold, Zelic, Schlosser (Sauer, 89), Held, Grbic, Ballmert, Arania, Makridis (Basic, 74), Pfister.

Darmstadt's 2-1 defeat at Karlsruher SC also ended any remaining theoretical hopes the South Hessian club had of finishing the season in the top three. The loss at the Wildpark stadium served somewhat as a symbol for the past few weeks, during which SV 98 had only managed one point from five matches since the international break in March. Following the game on Sunday afternoon, the Darmstadt players addressed the assembled media representatives with mixed feelings.
