After two consecutive defeats, the U21 team of SV Darmstadt 98 has bounced back. Last Sunday (April 27), the young Lilies were rewarded for their hard work in the LOTTO Hessenliga with a hard-earned 1-0 away win at TuS Hornau.
The match against the deep-lying and well-organised hosts was a test of patience from the start. The Lilies dominated, especially in the first half hour, controlling the ball and their opponents and creating numerous chances. Defensively, the team barely conceded anything during this phase – the only thing missing was a goal. As the game progressed, Darmstadt began to make minor errors, allowing Hornau to gain a better foothold on the counterattack.
Even after the break, the home team remained compact defensively, making it difficult for SV 98 to find any real gaps. Hornau weakened itself in the 58th minute: After receiving a red card, they retreated even further into their own half. The Lilies continued to attack – and were finally rewarded for their tireless efforts in the closing stages: Kuhlmann, who had been substituted on just six minutes earlier, scored the decisive goal to make it 1-0 in the 86th minute.
With the win, the Lilies remain in fourth place in the Hessenliga and thus within striking distance of the top of the table. The U21s continue their campaign next Sunday (May 4th, 3pm) at home against SC 1960 Hanau.
We believed until the end that we could win the game. A hard-fought victory like this is obviously very welcome after two defeats.
