“We didn’t defend consistently”

Back to Darmstadt without anything countable. The Lilies lost 3-0 to VfL Wolfsburg on the 32nd Bundesliga matchday – An early double strike and a goal in stoppage time sealed the defeat in Lower Saxony. The Darmstadt protagonists were correspondingly disappointed with the outcome of the game on the microphones after the final whistle. We have compiled the quotes from the game in the Volkswagen Arena for you.

Torsten Lieberknecht:

„Congratulations to VfL Wolfsburg on their deserved victory. We had the opportunity to take the lead through Tim Skarke in the first few minutes. But in the phase after that we made mistakes that are punished at this level. That’s how we ended up with 0: 2 behind. In our situation it is of course very difficult mentally to be down by two goals so early, but we managed to close the wings better and find our way into the game in the air, but in the end VfL got through the game confidently and deserved to win.“

Ralph Hasenhüttl:

„We solved it very seriously at the beginning and played out the situations very well. After the second goal, the opponent changed things a little, it became more difficult, so we were a little lacking in solutions. After the break we had more switching actions, wanted to allow the opponent come a little bit, that definitely worked, but we didn’t make the most of our situations. At 2-0 you’re still a little nervous on the sidelines, but you could always feel a positive tension and concentration. Congratulations to my team.“

Alexander Brunst:

„We were 2-0 down after 10 minutes. After that, it was important that we stayed clear in our heads and didn’t get caught up in a whirlwind. After that, we got into the game better and were more courageous with the ball. We even had that one or two chances, but didn’t score the goal. In the second half, the game just sputtered along. We did the bare minimum. That reflects the season: a lot of effort, little results. Overall it was a deserved victory for VfL Wolfsburg.“

… about his start:

„The idea has been around for a while, but unfortunately I’ve had muscular problems in the last few weeks. After relegation was unfortunately sealed, it quickly became clear that I would still get one or two games – because I deserved it, always put my foot down and kept my foot on it, it was an honour for me to be able to play another Bundesliga game.“

Christoph Zimmermann:

„We noticed straight away in the first ten minutes that we didn’t get into our pressing, were too timid and couldn’t implement what we had planned. When we conceded goals, we didn’t defend them consistently and ended up with a 2-0 deficit, after ten minutes it was of course a Herculean task. It was important that we stabilised and at the end of the first half we had our chances to possibly score the next goal. After the break we defended well but we didn’t really have any high-percentage chances ourselves. Wolfsburg played it down confidently and in a ruthless manner. The third goal hurt because it obviously made the result look very clear. But we didn’t collapse after the 2-0 defeat, we woke ourselves up because of it. You can already see that we were seized by the honour and didn’t want to be dismantled here. We know which coat of arms we wear on our chest and we want to represent the lily in every game. You can still see that this team is intact and nobody is tearing each other apart on the pitch. It remains a privilege for us to play in the Bundesliga. Accordingly, we want to play the remaining two games professionally and tackle them with joy.“

Fan Evening

As part of our monthly fan evenings, we would like to provide the opportunity for exchange between the club and its members and fans. We realised how important this exchange is after the Augsburg game and are generally of the opinion that we have to constantly develop, improve and design many things together at the rebuilt Bölle. We would therefore like to focus on the various stands at intervals during our fan evenings in the future. And then we use the collected results and experiences to create the overall stadium experience „Böllenfalltor“.
