The game day quote

There was a red card for Wolfsburg in the first leg, but we couldn't take advantage of it. We don't like losing to a team twice in a season. That's why we want to win the second leg against VfL Wolfsburg - that's how we go to Wolfsburg.

The last meeting:

In the home game against VfL Wolfsburg, the Lilies started bravely, but the first efforts were taken by the guests. After three minutes, Svanberg shot in the penalty area, but the attempt did not cause any problems for Marcel Schuhen. Overall, the initial phase was without a large number of scoring chances.

From the 27th minute onwards, the Lilies were in the majority: Luca Pfeiffer forced Lacroix to lose the ball, the Wolfsburg player was the last man able to make do with a foul and was shown the red card due to the foul. In the period that followed, the 98ers played patiently with a lot of ball possession, but rarely found gaps in the Wolfsburg backline. It only became dangerous shortly before the half-time whistle, but Mathias Honsak’s header flew over the box in stoppage time at the end of the half.

The Darmstadt team started bravely again in the second half, but as in the first half, Wolfsburg had the first chance, but Klaus Gjasula was there and blocked Majer’s shot on 53 minutes. Four minute late, Wind tried from the halfway line and the ball flew just past the goal. At the other end, the Lilies also became dangerous: first a cross from Emir Karic was cleared at the last second after 58 minutes, then 2 minutes late, a header from Honsak landed in the arms of the keeper. But the lead then fell to VfL: Majer scored in the 63rd minute to make it 1-0 for the guests.

About a quarter of an hour before the end of the game, the best chance for SVD up to that point: Fabian Schnellhardt tried from a distance and Casteels in the Wolfsburg goal couldn’t hold the ball, but was also there to counter Pfeiffer’s follow-up shot.
In the final minutes, the Darmstadt team pushed for an equaliser. Shortly before the end, substitute Fabio Torsiello saw his attempt blocked after 89 minutes. However, the effort was no longer rewarded and in the end there was a narrow defeat.

The opponent's opinion

“I don’t assume that it will be 3-0 for us after ten minutes on Saturday, that would be nice, but I don’t assume that,” said Ralph Hasenhüttl at the matchday press conference on Thursday. The Austrian is sure that it will be a game in which his team will need a lot of patience and calm. He also wants to completely ignore the Lilies‘ table situation, „it doesn’t matter,“ said the VfL coach.

Darmstadt's 2-1 defeat at Karlsruher SC also ended any remaining theoretical hopes the South Hessian club had of finishing the season in the top three. The loss at the Wildpark stadium served somewhat as a symbol for the past few weeks, during which SV 98 had only managed one point from five matches since the international break in March. Following the game on Sunday afternoon, the Darmstadt players addressed the assembled media representatives with mixed feelings.
