„This victory feels very good“

SV Darmstadt 98 beat Karlsruher SC 3-0 (1-0). Following the well-deserved home win, the protagonists were satisfied with their own performance and the once again very impressive atmosphere in the Merck Stadium at Böllenfalltor. We have summarised all the comments on the game for you.

Christian Eichner:

„Congratulations to Flo and Darmstadt on their well-deserved home win. I could now say: ‚If we had made it 1-0 after 5 minutes, it would have been really interesting.‘ But I can’t do that tonight. It was too obvious. The win was too deserved. After we missed our chance, the opponent took advantage of their first opportunity and was one goal better overall in the first half. And in the second half we lost the ball very often and Darmstadt were able to switch. Our best player was the goalkeeper, which is rarely good when you’re 3-0 down. Apart from one shot on goal by Kaufmann, we didn’t manage anything offensively.“

Florian Kohfeldt:

„Thank you for the congratulations. It was obviously good for us that the first ball didn’t go in. That could have caused us problems. After that, we controlled the game for the remaining 85 minutes and, from this control, became more decisive as the game progressed. So it’s a well-deserved win, which is extremely important. I’m very happy for the team. And for the environment. We saw a strong connection between the team and the fans again today. Despite the win, we will of course remain vigilant, because in this brutal league there is never any certainty.“

Marcel Schuhen:

„We were a little lucky at the start with the set piece. If KSC took the lead there, it would probably be a different game. We took the lead ourselves a little later, 1-0. It was similar after the break, when Kaufmann had another chance for Karlsruhe and we made it 2-0. We had that little bit of luck on our side today. Even after the 3-0, we kept at it, and it was important to everyone to keep a clean sheet today. A high level of concentration was required today, and that was present throughout the entire game. We started well and defended well in the block. We also had our space, and that’s how we got this result. A great evening for everyone involved.“

Merveille Papela:

„This victory is very good. We knew it was an important game and we are very happy to have played it successfully. As a team we were compact and the fans gave us an extra boost. The Bölle is a magical place when it is really lit. The coach prepared us very well before the game and the plan worked very well. Karlsruhe then had to adjust a little to it, but we had a solution for that too. I am of course proud and happy about my first goal, but the three points are the most important thing.“

Darmstadt's 2-1 defeat at Karlsruher SC also ended any remaining theoretical hopes the South Hessian club had of finishing the season in the top three. The loss at the Wildpark stadium served somewhat as a symbol for the past few weeks, during which SV 98 had only managed one point from five matches since the international break in March. Following the game on Sunday afternoon, the Darmstadt players addressed the assembled media representatives with mixed feelings.

„We must take the lead in the first half.“

A bitter end in Karlsruhe: After 90 entertaining minutes in which both teams sought salvation in attack, Darmstadt suffered a narrow defeat. The final score was 2-1 after a late goal from the home side, following Isac Lidberg's earlier equaliser. After the match, the players were particularly frustrated with the missed opportunities in the first half.

Opposition Check: Karlsruher SC

Left hook, 'One hundred and eightyyyyyyy', and hand over the baton. Doesn't sound like football – and that's true. KSC is often associated with professional football, but with the sheer number of titles the club has won, it's worth looking beyond the pitch. Titles from Baden-Württemberg to Rome.
